HI-18 DECISION GUIDE

Should You Buy a House or Build One?

Both are good decisions in the right circumstances. This is the honest version of the trade-off, not a sales pitch for either option.

OPTION A

Buy an Existing Property

  • Faster occupancy — move in within weeks, not years
  • You can inspect exactly what you're getting before you commit
  • Established neighbourhood, road network and utilities already proven
  • Limited or no control over layout, finishes and specification
  • You inherit whatever defects the existing building has

OPTION B

Build on Your Own Land

  • Full control over layout, room count, finishes and specification
  • You choose the exact site and district that suits you
  • New construction — no inherited wear, dated wiring or old plumbing
  • Longer timeline from land to move-in — typically many months
  • Requires active decisions throughout design and construction
